The Death of Danton, Georg Buchner's first play, which he wrote in 1835 at the age of 21 and while facing persecution for his revolutionary action, did not find its way to the stage until 1902. It was, however, staged by Max Reinhardt in 1916 who established it, albeit with a delay of almost a century, as one of the classic works of European drama. Since then, some of the most important directors of the 20th century, from Giorgio Strehler, Jean Villard and Erwin Piscator to Klaus-Michael Grüber and Christoph Marthaler have tried to match him. In Greece, The Death of Danton was one of the first plays that Fotos Politis staged at the then new National Theater in 1933, showing particular, for the time, attention to lighting and crowd scenes. In Buchner's work, the theater becomes the ideal medium for capturing the tragedy of politics. In the play's brief scenes, political reflection, rhetorical struggles, cynical political action, and, above all, the fickle judgment of the crowd, work together to illuminate the diverse tendencies, multiple motivations, and political considerations that make up the mosaic of the French Revolution. during the period of Terror. Revolutionary playwriting becomes a privileged tool for political reflection, as it highlights the dialectic of History. the multiple motivations and political considerations that make up the mosaic of the French Revolution during the period of the Terror.
